Not So Unexpected News

Posted on Tue Apr 20th, 2021 @ 7:03am by Lieutenant Aimee Sandoval

Mission: Mission 0: New crew and New Beginnings
Location: Obstetrics Ward
Timeline: MD 2: 1500

Aimee entered the exam room to see a young crewman sitting nervously on the edge of the exam bed. The crewman was human female no more than 18 and obviously fresh out of basic training.

"Darcy? Hi I'm Doctor Sandoval. How are we doing today?"

Darcy looked up from her hands which she had clasped together. "Fine I guess."

Aimee nodded and referenced her PADD. "It says here you have missed your period the last two months. There's a few explanations for this, but the easiest one to rule out is pregnancy."

Aimee dug out a tricorder from her lab coat flipped it open and scanned her patient. "Darcy congratulations you appear to be about six weeks pregnant." Aimee transfered the data from the tricorder to a wall monitor showing the outline of a tiny fetus. Darcy started crying.

"It was a mistake. My parents are going to kill me. We only did it once."

It wasn't the first time Aimee ran into an unplanned pregnancy. "That's all it takes sometimes. Look, it will be alright, and your parents won't kill you. I've seen this all before. Trust me, if your mom is anything like mine, she wants grand babies."

"What am I going to do?"

"Well right now, not much. You don't have to decide on anything just yet. However, you should abstain from drugs and alcohol."

Darcy nodded.

"Let me get you..." she stood up and went to the counter and pulled down a PADD. After a couple of quick entries she handed it to Darcy. "That has a list of vitamins I recommend you take, and there's a diet that research has indicated promotes prenatal growth and your overall good health. Don't feel like you need to follow it to the letter. You aren't a bad mom if you skip a meal or eat chocolate cake instead of some chicken. Women have been having babies since the dawn of time, so relax and try to enjoy the journey."

Darcy was still silent, but did manage a nod.

"Let me get a quick physical on you, and I'll need to get some labs." Aimee quickly finished the physical. "Okay all done. Would like to see you back here in four weeks okay?" Aimee considered something, "Do you think talking to someone would help you sort through this?"

Darcy hesitated, "I don't know. I don't think so."

"Tell you what: I'll set you up with a consult with psychology, and if you feel like you need to talk you can make an appointment."

"Thank you."

"Good. Okay, I'll see you in four weeks."
